Kedareshwara Temple - Nagalapura

Those of us who have visited Nagalapura temples will surely remember being awestruck by the sheer magnificence of the temples, wondering and praising the ornamentation and embellishment. A notable feature of the decoration is the exuberance of detail and the effective repetition of the same motif. The of Kedareshwara temple & Keshva Temple was so much an architectural achievement as a remarkable example of tireless inventiveness and caprice in sculptured decoration.

The temple of Kedareshwara is situated about a furlong to the north and is located in a tiny enclosure. Here too, the shrine has a single sanctum without a tower opening into the vestibule which is connected to the Navaranga. The temple stands on a Jagati, the platform that can be reached by a couple of steps.

The outside of the temple walls again have the six friezes and the rows and carvings are exactly like the Channakeshava temple. The outer wall of the sanctum is a sixteen-cornered satellite structure with some finely carved images all around. Above the friezes are numerous images of gods and goddesses protected by the turrets that run around. The top portion of the walls has rhythmic patterns of towers.

Some of the images on the wall include those of Ganesha, Mohini, Dharani-Varaha, Trivikrama, Lakshmi, Bhairava, Gajantaka, Brahma, Mahishasuramardhini,Arjuna,Shanumga, Parvathi-Paramesvara & Musical troops.

Sathodi Waterfalls -Yellapur

After an exhausted journey we occupied the room and slept well. Everyone got up early and had heavy breakfast and were ready to leave by 8am.We hired 2 bikes and started heading along near Ganesh Gudi road. However it was still very early and the cold breeze was pleasing for me. We had to pass through the back waters of Kali River (Kodasalli) along the mud track.

We parked our vehicles to near forest gate and had taken few minutes walk through the forest. Since we had reached very early of the day probably we had avoided the usual crowd. Early in the morning when the first light falls on the waterfalls was so charming. The early morning freshness and sunrise amidst the waterfalls made its very memorable.

This majestic waterfall drops from Kallaramane Ghat and then joins further down to the backwaters of Kodasalli dam built across Kali River which has got rare and exceptional reptiles, rich and abundant forest with its wild habitat and enticing birds. At times they are just rushing along nearly horizontal rocks then they fall dramatically into a narrow canyon. The mist around makes the setting magical to view.

We showed up at a time when the lighting wasn't so great for photographing the waterfall we're practically looking against the sun. It was morning when we were there, but I believe that since this is a west-facing waterfall, the afternoons should yield a better photographing experience. The area of the falls provides ample opportunities for rock climbing and water sports.

Panoramic Mountain top views, tranquil backwater, the majestic beauty and timelessness of this awe-inspiring tropical rainforest, and breath taking scenery of the waterfalls are just spectacular outdoor experiences along the bike riding was indescribable in words and should be experienced.

Jenukallu Gudda - Yellapur

After spending a short time in Magod we headed to Jenukallu Gudda which is just few kilometers away from Magod. There wasn't much easy approach, as the trail passed through dense forests. The roads are manageable but at certain points they do offer a challenge for bikers. Last 2.5 km’s in mud boulders track was really ghastly attempt on bike.

After a hard bike ride we reached to Jenukallu. There was a viewpoint through which we could view the entire valley. The view point is atop a sheer cliff of 500 meters high. Wow! Some sight and wonderful filled with excitement like small children, we were actually enjoying this breathtaking view and experience of a point in a Jenkallu Gudda. This lovely panoramic view that we got from the Viewpoint was even lovelier.

There are three hills here, which are at a very high altitude. They are Jenukallu Gudda, Kodekallu Gudda and Balekallu Gudda. The highest hill is the Balekallu Gudda. Jenu means Honey, Kallu means stone and Gudda means hill. This place is a viewpoint in the Western Ghat, which offers a panoramic view of the hills packed one behind the other.

Jenukallu Gudda is situated 17 Kms from Yellapur. The Bedti River from MagodFalls cuts across the green hills and bounces all the way to join the Arabian Sea beyond the hills. The breathtaking view of the valley is worth a visit and this place is famous for its magical sunset.

Bisle...

We were actually traveling this place for to visit some other place mean time we covered the Bisile (Yasaluru) Viewpoint on our journey. We traveled from Subramanya on the Bisle Ghat road the breathtaking Bisle Ghat is a stretch of beautiful adventurous spot between Subramanya and Sakleshpur.

While traveling in Ghat road traffic was very less and it made us driving was more pleasure and comfortable but road was not in good condition it’s really challenging to drive the journey was very bumpy and the ride along the Ghats was adventurous.

We saw Patlabetta and Kannadikallu from Ghat road are the two hills worth watch of a trek. Uniqueness of Kannadikallu is that one side of this hill is almost 90 degree, making it unable to climb it. Further, the hill gets the name because according to the local belief, the hill, which is a huge rock, used to reflect the sunrays during sun set.

Finally we reached our destination but none of us were tired, because of the fresh breeze and breathe taking view of the Ghat. The greenery turns into completely something else I smelled the moist atmosphere. The lush green expanse relaxed our tired brains.

After few minutes walk we sighted the Viewpoint were standing into an edge of the flat surface rock from where we could see the full view of the beauty of Bisile. This was a magnificent spot where one can have a breathtaking view of the three mountain ranges-Yenikallu Betta (Hassan district), Doddabetta and Pushpagiri (both located in Kodagu district) and Kumaraparvatha.

The rain forests surrounding the region of Bisile, and the beautiful view that we got from the Bisile viewpoint is something that I would cherish always. From viewpoint we could have a magnificent view of the entire place. This view was worth the visit and the whole scenic beauty here was breathtaking.

Mallikarjuna temple -Pankajannahally

Beautiful village Pankajannahally near to KB cross it’s about 14 km south of Chikkanayakanahalli and has a Mallikarjuna temple of large proportions. It is a structure of Dravidian style and has a Garbhagriha, a Shukanasi, a Pradakshina-patha, a Navaranga, a Porch, a Prakara, a Nandimantapa with a tower, a Mahadwara and Balistamba. The Linga in this temple is a conglomeration of pebbles and is said to represent 101 Lingas. The Mahadwara and its doorways are well-executed.

Nagalapura Chennakeshava Temple...

Nagalapura, a small hamlet lies amidst the fascinating natural scenery of Tumkur taluk, holds two unique temples noted for its rich architectural value. The two temples are good examples of Hoysala Art the antiquities of these temples are not yet known. However, from their architectural character and style, they may belong to 12th century AD.

After a lunch we drove to this place, after reached the village Rajesh sir first brought us to Chennakeshava temple. We collected the keys from the neighboring house and Ashok opened the main entrance of the temple

The temples made of soapstone consist of a sanctum, a Sukanasi, a Navaranga. The sanctum of Chenna Kesava temple holds six-feted Chenna Kesava idol beautifully sculpted. The ceiling and pillars are carved brilliantly.

As we moved around the temple, the images of gods and goddesses were seen on the walls of the temple. The exquisitely carved figures of various forms of Shiva, Ugra-Narasimha, Madanika, Apsara , Garuda , Mahishamardini, Lakshmi and Giridhara are neatly arranged on the outer walls of the temple.

The temple stands on the raised platform circumambulatory path to go round the temple, carved repetitive friezes for basement cornices, introduction of a eave between the figure sculpture and turreted pilasters, exuberant ornamentation of the figure sculptures, are all the predominant features of Hoysala architecture. After handover the key to the villager we headed to the Kedaresvara temple.

Turuvekere Hoysala temples...

I visited few couple of unique temples at Turuvekere a town in Tumkur district; Rajesh Naik made efficient heritage trip headed our small team to Channigaraya Temple situated in western periphery of the town. When we were reach the temple, the temple was closed so we couldn’t able to see the inner part of the temple.

This Ekakootachala temple was built in 1260 A.D during the reign of Narasimha III by Soma-Dandanayaka. The temple, which faces east is built in potstone and raised on a stellate three-foot high parapet. A stone superstructure with five stories surrounds the sanctum, which is a stellate plan, and the final Kalasa is made of stone. The vestibule and the hall are square in form.

Channigaraya Temple

The temple of Chennigaraya is a rather compact, less exuberant structure on a platform. The outer walls are well cut, but without images. However, I heard the image of Channakeshava in the sanctum is very beautiful and similar to the one in Belur but we couldn’t able to sight it. Later we visited to Gangadaresvara temple near by this.

Moole Shankara temple

Another Hoysala temple at Turuvekere that is contemporary to the Channakeshava temple is the Moole Shankara temple. This clearly brings out the religious harmony that existed during the Hoysala reign, both the Vishnu and Shiva shrines built close to each other at pretty much the same period. "Moole" in Kannada means "corner", and the temple, as with many other Hoysala temples, is at a corner of the Turuvekere town.

Mallalli Waterfalls

Last weekend, I had a chance to go to Mallalli Waterfalls, the biggest falls in Kodagu district and part of the Pushpagiri Wildlife sanctuary . It’s only a 45 minutes trip from Somvarpet, but it’s a half day program for us that could go from morning to 2 pm.

Along with a couple friends and I, all we together organized a wonderful program on last weekend. Including myself and the driver, we had a total of fifteen people for this trip. After breakfast, we set out for a three hour drove through Bisle Ghat road and Its carried us a glorious session to explore the countryside of WesternGhat.

After paying the entrance fee, we continued to deep into the reserve towards horrible mud road. We went ahead on the muddy path and parked our vehicle within about 5 minutes driving from the gate we left vehicle and continued towards well-marked, well-traveled mud track and after a mile and a half, we came within sight of Mallalli falls. We spent few minutes on top of the Mallalli Valley.

It is a series of incredible cascades raining down from the base of the Pushpagiri was the magnificent scene the river Kumaradhara leaps over 200ft creating this spectacular view. The scenery was just breathtaking and with no doubt one of the most beautiful areas I had been to during my stay in Coorg.

Few steps ahead, there was a steep descent thru the jungle route. The route was slippery though definitely manageable. Within 10 minutes, we were at the base, looking in awe of the white carpet of water cascading right in front of us from such a height! The base of this waterfall was crowded as well, but steerable it was.

At 200 feet tall, Falls fills the rocky amphitheater with a constant breeze and sound that resembles a roaring applause. We carefully crept closer to the big drop and felt the spray, which was very cold.

We spent the next 20 minutes silently admiring the waterfall, pristine tiered pools, great weather quality & our surroundings, clicked a few pictures, enjoyed the cool breeze along with which fine droplets from the waterfall just settled on our faces! Oh! Heaven!!!

After a long traverse, I found what I was looking for, the objective of waterfall hunting is to get inspired by nature and its ability to be amazing through no effort at all. Mallalli Falls will likely forever be breathtaking to humans. When we see these natural wonders and take home with us the spark of their mystical beauty, we can use it to spread the love of the outdoors and our rare, delicate planet.

Ballalarayana Durga....

It was pretty cold in the morning, but the warmth under sleeping bag made me to feel comfortable after a tiring day. I woke up with a clear blue sky and got some shining views of Bandaje waterfalls and surrounding mountains. The breakfast for the day was cup of noodles and then we packed up for another eventful day. After having a light breakfast, we started to trek ahead towards Ballalarayana Durga.

The first few kilometers are particularly strenuous, as the trek has a continuous ascent with a gradient of 45 to 70 degrees right up to Ballalarayandurga. The trail is skinny and at some points there seems to be no sign of trail and at one point I lost the trail and got confused the right way, Green canopied huge mountains covered everywhere I struggle to find the trail. I recalled my past experience particularly which I had spent long back in this land and decided to hike left side sharp mountain.

I know its a hard attempt to hike on dry steep mountains our walk goes more stretchy and long each time when we stepped the top of the hills we found many bigger mountains each time when stepped top on the the hill our initial journey goes like this only.

Surprisingly We spotted wild Gaur at a distance of 50 meters was a stunning moment it stared us for some time and got disappeared from the spot speedily (Gaur is listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List since 1986. It is the largest species of wild cattle, bigger than the African buffalo and wild water buffalo.) Hopefully my few photos will given a small indication of the beauty of this wild animal.

The trek to Ballarayanadurga through dense tropical forests and Shola grasslands, with magnificent views of mountains peaks , Sightly valleys and the mystical music of stream flowing down in the valley.

At one place I found the clear sign of trail and it quite exhilarating. we were back on the trail and we able to sight Fort from long distance. We moved, as we had all trip, quite slowly. The wind howling across the barren rocks and grass was cooling our bodies from burning sun. The spectacular views, the exhilaration, the beautiful and hostile environment. I don’t think I can really describe it, certainly not well enough to do it justice.

We took around 4 hours to reach top of the fort and stayed inside the fort for while. It is quiet, devoid of any people or noise - beauty of calm and gentle breeze are the valued treasures one can enjoy here. After spending few minutes then headed back down with another side of the fort.

A few hours and we were down to the estate, and then another couple minutes of walk to our last destiny point. Just few meters before I reach vehicle I fell down and my leg got hurt badly. Fortunately this happened very near to our vehicle so I only had to walk only few steps with broken leg. I felt bad for the tragedy end but all together ended with nice memories. By 4PM we were out of the park and headed for back to home.

Bandaje waterfalls

See the stunning scenery of Bandaje waterfalls and beautiful mountain ranges of Ballalarayana Durga (fort) in two days (22km) long walk was not so easy but this time once again I chosen to hike this place with few curious nature lovers . At the base of Bhandaje, the track passes through Kudremukha national park so initial we faced some serious difficulties from forest department and got delay to start on a late morning. And also recent death on this place made more trouble us to find some guide.

Finally we one local guy joined us and he willing to guide us but on the half way he left us without any reason and once again the whole responsibility had fall down to my head, I had last hiked here in 2007 and immediately I noticed many improvements to the trail there is only one stream crossing which is easy.

This wasn’t easy walk quite the extreme upper walk requires a lot of determination, patience and strength. This hike is not for the faint of hearten hikers. It’s a tough upper walk in very rough terrain. The trail is extremely overgrown, unmarked, and in many areas it has been devastated .

I stopped and took a break several times as people would pass me and then I would pass them as they would break. As we gained more and more altitude, the views became majestic. The hike was very hard and we had lunch nearby stream.

Trekking through the hills was unremittingly scenic with streams thick evergreen jungles and grasslands. After a long upper stretch walk I reach the open grassland area and all our teammates joined me and we all relaxed for while and started to to more hike to reach our destiny before getting dark.

It says its about a mile to the top what it doesn't say is it is the longest mile ever! The bright blue sky, with just the right amount of clean white clouds thrown in, was designed perfectly to go with the greenery. We could spot many hills around us I stopped in for a look and after seeing the falls from the westbound edge of the grasslands terrain I said to my fellow hikers "Wow that was well worth the hike" and as I said it I felt emotion roll over me as this view was so amazing I decided to walk up the trail to the top of the waterfalls.

After crossing the first grassland hill one more grassland is much bigger than the earlier one and had head-high grass. First I reached the summit I waited for rest of my teammates we climbed down to the steep trail into the forest and continued for a bit more towards a open surface on top of the waterfalls.

When I did arrive at the falls , it exceeded my expectations and made all the tough walk,scrapes and bruises worthwhile. This is a beautiful waterfall, in a very scenic setting, and well worth the work to get there and watching sun-set view and awesomeness of the falls is so amazing. The dizzying drop is almost surreal. look out over the falls, keep head down and look at the ground until you get right up to the edge I just couldn't stop staring down the water as it goes from babbling brook to water droplets in harmonic flight.

The hike into Bhandaje not the only rewarded the jungle trek is its own adventure as a guide navigates the grasslands, streams and mountains to reveal spectacular waterfall, once I got to the top the falls sore calves, worn out lungs and sweaty armpits will disappear and my visual high would last well into the next day.

Belligundi Falls - The Leviathan of Adventure

Belligundi trek was one of the exiting treks I ever had with my friend Ashok which is one of the most picturesque place of Western Ghats, falling from a height of 300 feet and hidden deep in the forests.. I visited this place long back with some everlasting memories and was surely a tough task for the trekkers through the flowing streams, rolling velvet hills,Passing through dense jungles and lush green forests with the steep slopes and huge boulders was totally a great escapade ever we did on this land and the the sight of the cascade feast to the eyes.

My friend Srikanth recently made successful trip to this place with his friends on 10th December .I really thank to him for sharing his experience in my blog about his voyage with solid photos and details.

---After my first trek in 2007 to the base of Belligundi falls, time and again plans for a re-trek fell flat due to logistics and guide issues. This time, things fell in place and we headed off on a crisp bright morning of Dec 9 from Hebbage in shimoga. A sharp turn on the smooth highway led us to the beautiful farm of our genial guide Halappa who was waiting for us.

The initial crossover from his farm leads to vision of what lies ahead, the entrance of a massive, dark, dense jungle filled with huge trees. There is a well walked path which leads to a small forest temple, this is the actual start of trek. There is exactly no path but Halappa's memory of forest led us into deeper dense jungle which without him looked similar everywhere the cluster of trees. The first 1 hour of walking through the dense leech infested, damp, moss filled ground took us to a small man made pool. Halappa told there was an abandoned fort akin to Kanoor Kote now total down and overgrown by forest, swallowed total. Exact 1 hour walk from here showcases an array of monstrous trees over 100 feet in height. This leads to the second part of trek which is the opening of a cliff. It is 3 kms treacherous climb down at inclination of 70 degrees leading to the first sight of falls. From here we are greeted with boulders strewn all around with varying sizes and shapes with gushing water. In monsoon time these rocks remain submerged making it near impossible to crossover. A careful negotiation of the boulders brings us to the base of falls in its full glory. The surprising thing is it is not at all deep at the base even with falls Cascading at a height of 500 feet. One can easily stand below the falls.

Standing below the falls one can only wonder at the might of the falls in monsoon glory - evident the way it has cut and shaped the valley below. One can easily spot the belligundi viewpoint which is the opposite cliff from where one can see this falls standing at the cliff edge on their way to Goodanagundi Falls and below it Maalurgundi Falls. Our preference for this route though it is tough was the sheer beauty of the forest and the added beauty of huge trees rarely spotted outside.

After a dip in the magical waters it was time to finish our quick lunch and head back. Camping was a good idea too but it was another plan altogether. The climb back initial 3 kms of the cliff is one real herculean task until the even forest ground is reached. The beauty of such a tall falls undisturbed by human presence was worth all the hardship. With hearts filled with accomplishment and savoring the beauty indelibly graven in our heart and mind, we set out the ascent back to civilization.

The Twin temples - Mosale

Mosala or Mosale Hosahalli, a small hamlet lies amidst the fascinating natural scenery of Hassan taluk, holds two unique temples noted for its rich architectural value. Constructed on the lines of Hoysala architecture, Trikootachala temples dedicated to Nageshwara and Chenna Kesava respectively stand side-by-side, a few feet apart, is identical in design and workmanship.

Old stories say that in ancient days sage Jamadagni had a hermitage in this place and the village was earlier called as Musala, which means a pestle. The two temples are good examples of Hoysala Art. The antiquities of these temples are not yet known. However, from their architectural character and style, they may belong to 13th century AD.

The temples made of soapstone consist of a sanctum, a sukanasi, a navaranga and a porch (mukhamantapa) with a jagathi on either side. The sanctum of Chenna Kesava temple holds six-feted Chenna Kesava idol beautifully sculpted. The prabhavali placed behind Chenna Kesava has the images of Matsya, Koorma, and Varaha etc representing incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Sridevi and Bhudevi placed on either side of Chenna Kesava are attractive. The doorway of sanctum has a Gajalakshmi. Rangamantapa has a lotus-shaped, artistically designed ceiling carved with the figures of Indra, Agni, Varuna, and Vaayu - the Astadikpalakas sitting on their vehicle.

The Nageshwara temple has a sanctum, a sukanasi, navaranga and a mantapa. One can see a beautifully sculpted Nandi idol here. The Nageshwara and Chenna Kesava temples have an elaborately carved with intricate geometrical patters and marvel designed ceilings.

As we move around the temple, the images of gods and goddesses are seen on the walls of the temple. The exquisitely carved figures of Saraswathi, Ugra-Narasimha, Kalingamardhana, Madanika, Apsara and Giridhara are neatly arranged on the outer walls of the temple attract the attention of tourists. Each temple has an elegant tower in front, which is carved a fine figure of sala with the tiger. The creeper torana, windows, panels and pillars are very attractive.

Two inscriptions are placed in the temple premises. One of these belongs to the Vijayanagara period (Dana Shasana). The second inscription has been totally damaged but has Jainism features. These inscriptions are not related to the temple. The temple complex is listed with the department of central archeology.

These two temples are in the same complex and designed by following the laws of Vastu. These temples are famous for their sculptural beauty. This complex does not have a gopura or a royal gateway. The pathways leading to the Stone door-frame of the Garbhagruha of the Nageshwara temple has been violated and needs repair.

Bhandara Basadi- Sravanabelagola

Facing the Jaina Matha is the Bhandara Basadi built by Bhandari Hullayya, a Hoysala Treasurer in 1159. This rectangular structure has Garbhagriha with 12 pillars and also pilasters, a Rangamantapa and another Rangamantapa at the entrance called Saraswathi Mantapa.

The back wall has a long pitha with 24 Tirthankaras in uniform height, installed in a row and they have fine decoration on the Prabhavali and also the figure of their respective Yaksha- Yakshid on their either side.

Outside the wide Garbhagriha with 36 columns to the right and left of the Rangamantapa three are four shrins and one of them houses Padmavathi and another Brahma. The Saraswati Mantapa is a later renovation where Pravachanas were held. This was renovated by a Changalva minister Devappa in Vijayanagara satyle.

KoteAbbi Waterfalls

In my last Coorg visit our Jeep driver said ‘if you have time go to KoteAbbi falls’ my ears perked at that bit of information. He seemed sincere after all when we paid him he flashed a good smile and said ‘Do go to falls you’ll love it’. I knew then that it was going to be a long day my perceptions about this place are about to change irrevocably.

Also I collected some useful information from Arvind sir about this place I like to thank him, he provided some useful information’s about this place and an existence of this waterfalls. After a short journey we came to near our destined place. A short walk brought up us to in front of the fall. It is a beautiful sight to see the waterfalls flowing into a gorge from a height of 40-50 feet.

Water flows rapidly into a pond with a loud roar. The mist kicked up by the falls cooled the surrounding air. The pristine surrounding adds to the beauty of the place. Fresh water gushing through rocks. We could never tell how deep the water ran. The big pond and water droplets make it difficult to view the falls from close. But still we manged to reach left side of the waterfalls Moreover, every step on the boulders has to be traded carefully near the waterfall as it can prove dangerous.

The waterfalls magnificence of what I did see for that brief moment will stay with me forever and I still consider its one of the highlights of the trip.

BALLIGAVI KEDARESHWAR TEMPLE

Balligavvi a ancient town in Shikaripura Taluk its known for its ancient monuments. also well known as Dakshina Kedara. I visited Kedaresvara Templ few years back This temple is an excellent example of a trikuta (triple towers) temple in a transitional Western Chalukya-Hoysala architecture Its the oldest example of such a combinational style in Karnataka. This town had 54 temples and few Basadies of which only a few survived today.

The word Balli in Kannada refers to creepers grown in forests or gardens. Gavi means cave. In ancient times Balligavi backed up as an University for learning with numerous schools with the earliest being the Jaina basadis. The availability of water in plenty with lakes and rivers surrounding the area was an ideal learning atmosphere. This area is generally blessed with abundant rainfall due to western ghats.

The dancing queen Shantala Devi too hailed from Balligavi along with famous architects and sculptors of the Hoysala era, Malloja, Dasoajja, Nadoja, Siddoja etc originated from Balligavi. It will be safe to assume there was a school for sculpting too in Balligavi patronized by the Kadambas, Chalukyas and Hoysala royals. Akkamma Maha Devi too was married to a merchant hailing from Balligavi.

Balligavi complex contains the main kedareswar temple complex , with surrounding temple edifices from Badami Chalukyan era. ( 685-86 AD) They seem to have been moved from neighboring land in lieu of their crumbling structure. The statues adorning the facade are missing. The Hoysala symbol of Sala slaying tiger is embedded by Hoysalas subsequently 1060 AD, by King Vijayaditya.

The temple faces east and has a stepped entrance on three sides. The entrance on the sides is a Western Chalukya idiom. The central shrine has a Linga made from black marble (Krishnashila). The shrine to the south has a linga called Brahma and the shrine to the north has a statue of Janardhana.

The temples outside plan is in "staggered-square" style with many projections and recesses which is a Hoysala design. The outer walls of the open mandapa (hall) have carvings of women wearing fine jewellery. Two Hoysala emblems were added in 1060 CE by .Hoysala Vinayaditya The superstructure (tower) of the vimana are very well decorated with sculptures of Tandaveshwara, Varaha, Uma Narasimha, Bhairava etc and the sukanasi of all three towers still exist.

The western shrine is the oldest dating from the 7th or 8th century. Attached to the vestibule that connects the shrines is a well designed open mantapa with two rows of pillars. The outer row of pillars are 16 faced while the inner row of pillars are lathe turned with bell shaped mouldings, a style popular with both Western Chalukys and Hoysalas.

The ceiling of the mantapa is flat and the inner ceiling is well carved with lotuses in them. The central ceiling has the carving of Tandaveshwara (dancing Shiva) with eight dikpalakas (guards). The entrance to the shrine which faces east has a Nandhi the bull and a celestial attendant of Shiva.

Mathada Basti...ShravanBelagola

This Jain Basti is known for it’s exquisite sculptures and frescoes. Its located in the town next to the Bhandara Basti. In this Muth the walls, of the Verandah which surrounds a central courtyard, are decorated with mural paintings.

The Jain religion is contemporary of Buddhism, believes in cycle of rebirths and consequently regards life as painful, longing for liberation. It came to Karnataka four centuries before the Christian era. The Gangas, Kadamba, Chalukyas and Hoysala kings had encouraged the Jainism. They have left innumerable shrines, Bastis , Gomata statues and Stambhas (pillars). The Matha or the Mathada Basadi appears to have been built or renovated during the 18^th century. But Chavundraya founded the Matha and installed his guru Namichandra Sidhantadeva here.

There is open space in the middle of the Math and of late it is covered by a ceiling and a store was added in 1930. The Matha has three donors engraved on them are worshiped here. Its walls have fone murals : One depioting the durbar of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and also paintings of Panchparameshthis, Neminanatha , Parshwanatha's Samavasarana, Yakshas and Yakshis, forests where munis lived etc.

The panels on left depict the life of Parshvanatha who underwent many rebirths. In his firs birth he was known as Marubhuta born to a minister to king Aravinda. He had an evil brother called Kamatha. When elder brother was on a mission with the king, Kamatha declare himself the emperor and tricked his brother's wife to have sex with him. After the king's return he was severely punished.

He was given a head shave while boys urinated on his head; He was parade on a donkey's back while the boys threw stones at him. All these events could be recognized in different panels. Other wall paintings depict episodes from King Bharata and Prince Nagakumar an annual fair has been painted in detail.

WaateHole Waterfalls …

Uttara Kannada with their differing climates, lush green rain forests and mountains we expect to find various most striking backdrops. The place is blessed with deep gorges yielding most spectacular waterfalls. This time I like to share my experience to this place which i had visited few weeks back.

Actually it’s not my plan, my friend Rajesh Naik surprisingly preferred to go Vatehole waterfalls for our sake on lunch time at Sirsi. After a soft journey we left our car near by stream and crossed the brook and Rajesh Sir led in the right direction to us. Initial few minutes smooth walk on fine Jeep track we took right deviation on a narrow steep downer paled rout.

s I scanned nothing looked easy but I could see what appeared to be a possible rout and set off. It was difficult clambered down the steep slope, brushing aside low branches, scrambling over moss laden rocks until I came across a steep slope that seemed to offer a way out.

The descent from there was frightening one slip in the wrong place and I could have been killed or big injuries; at the very worst was very slippery muddy steep trail without any support all fear gripped me. Literally hauled myself up the slippery section at one point there someone had put a small lash for support so to avoid falling into the ravine.

Eventually after a hard attempt I reached to the base of second falls, the view from here was magnificent. It was a wonderful set of falls though the reality they are just series of cascades culminating from the top and after taking some picks I pushed up the side for little and had an excellent view of the waterfalls, large rock formations and undergrowth that was impenetrable blocked to go more closely.

The water is bigger than stream and smaller than a river, by name Vate HoLe makes this visual treat. 'Vate' is the local name for the river side bamboo which can be found in plenty here. and Hole is Kannada for a medium sized river.

I stopped and had some fresh water and reflected on how lucky I had been. Lucky not to have fallen in a new place lucky I hadn’t been injured or bitten by anything and lucky to have made it here one of the special places I had been to in my travels.

20 meters further on the second base I reached the base of the third falls. Had I taken direct rout from the right side of the 2 base it would have taken me about 10minutes all up yet I managed to trash my way around the next level.

When I got back to just top of the 4^th step I thought spied another possible lead to approach base to the 4^th step. I was drawn to the possibility that may be there was an approach on the right perhaps a traverse across the rock face might be feasible. I wasn’t a quitter just lack of time I left it for my next visit.

Had a nice time and time to retreat so while back I climbed into the plant that was to haunt me it was some kind of stinging plants. I was shattered a half hour of climbing had back at jeep track. After few minutes smooth walk we reached the stream bed had bath freshenedup soul and boudy till days turn dark:-)

Mandalpatti – Coorg

I was off to discover the secrets of some parts of the Coorg I went on this trip at 5^th Nov with my friends. After a frenzied journey on the most horrible road we relaxed for while at Devarakolli waterfall, a small seasonal waterfall.

Further 24kms form Madikeri was thick forests, narrow uphill roads and in coffee estates that resound to the melody of birdsong traveling in these place was a natural wonder. The Breeze that climb over mountains, the newly- wed breeze, to that breeze land of Coorg extends a warm welcome.

There are 2 routs to this place but our bad luck one rout had closed .While approaching to Mandalpatti the way turned most dreadful and somewhere too dangerous to travel by Scorpio but our driver by himself took initiative and managed to travel next 6kms on that track.

At one place we stopped our vehicle and didn’t take more risk, we consulted one local Jeep driver he tried to thwart us indirectly for his benefit without any choice we agreed him and all shifted to his Jeep, for next 6 km’s he fixed 800rs he took fully benefit from our necessity.

Paying a little bit of extra cash we started out on a journey to uphill side. The track was most horrible and unsafe on some places huge boulders & landslip sections and a very narrow slick mud track some places road went through edge of the deep valleys all of that we ended our journey near to a small forest office where road ends.

After paying the entrance fees we got the permission to do further hike, this place comes under Pushpagiri Wildlife sanctuary. Although the hike was not much rigorous from the car park we followed the main trail and a short distance we reached the top. Weather was not too hot the views were absolutely breathtaking. The long hard journey was totally worth to it!!

We turned next hill top eventually after walking through a somewhat narrow trail we reached the another side of the hill top. the area changes color almost every second sun playing tremendous work here. It seemed like forever that I was soaking in the moment of being at the top of the hill. The Valley is full of thick vegetation watching Puspagiri & Kotebetta from top of the hill was fistful to eyes.

And when we full filled view of the mountains we took the shorten way to reach starting point. On return after few complication we hired another jeep. The driver brought us to his own small hut hotel were situated on the way-back. There is absolutely nothing much to eat but its real treat and a pleasant surprise after the journey back from the peak. That is lovely place to feed our empty stomachs on late noon.

Driving uphill through vast green plantations with damp white mist was really scenic. On way return the whole mountains covered by thick fog It was one of those times when we knew how quickly the weather could change and we had full glimpse of Mandalpatti by luckily …

Overall this trip was an unforgettable time. So relaxing, no stress, no phones, no pollution etc I'm way overdue for another trip to Mandarapatti ....

Shiva temples -Nadakalasi

We visited Nadakalasi temples long back which situated in Sagara was one of those forgotten monuments that its name was not part of the list of ancient monuments. The temple complex consists of 2 Shiva temples Mallikarjuna and Nilakantesvara. This temple was built during 1218 AD, when Baleyanna Pergade ruled this place. He was the Mandalika of Hoysala Second Veeraballala. This region was called as Kundanadu or Kodanadu at that time. After Baleyanna this place was ruled by Beeradevarasa. Later, when Vijayanagara Dynasty was established, Samrat Krishna Devaraya gifted this place to Keladi King Chaudappa Nayaka.

The temple is a fine example of Hoysala architecture It is said to be constructed by father and son sculptors, Jankana and Dakkana. They are constructed using the stone called `Somanatha Shile’, which was available in the village itself. Both the temples have been built on star-shaped plinth and the roofs are also of star-shape. The whole structure has been constructed on level platform. Each temples has a sanctum and a Navaranga with vast pillared-hall. The pillars are strikingly beautiful and hold a stark resemblance like other Hoysala temples.

Neelakanteshwara temple is just next to the Mallikarjuna temple and has only one entrance. The walls on either side of the main entrance have been carved with statues related to Vatsayana Kamasutra. It has a magnificent Gopuram over Garbhagriha where we saw the beautiful Hoysala emblem and a fine statue of Bhuvaneshwari. I and Ashok climbed the top with the help of local boys and took magnificient photos of that.

Mallikarjuna temple, the bigger one, is formed of Garbhagriha, Sukanasi, Rangamantapa and Basavamantapa. It has eight circular pillars in the Navaranga, which are carved with pictures of different dance forms and animals. Except Sukanasi, the other frontal part of the temple feature with half walls, this has provided the temple with a unique brightness. The Navaranga has three entrances at three directions.

The temple stands out like a marvel against the backdrop of an ordinary village. The surrounding rural countryside is tranquil with lush fields, quiet lakes and very little traffic. Beyond this, our interest was at best casual as we wandered around the temple. We just absorbed whatever we saw. Some sculptures seemed to know more than me & Ashok about ancient practices.

RAMESVARA TEMPLE, Keladi.

Keladi in Sagar taluk of Shimoga district was the capital of the Nayakas identified by their capital Keladi. They were the feudatories of the Vijayanagara rulers and subsequently became independent and began to rule Keladi. The Ramesvara temple is in their capital Keladi. No inscription has been useful to date this temple but according to the work Keladi Nripavijaya the Grabhagriha of this temple was built Chowdappa Nayak the founder of this dynasty (1500-1530 A.D.) and his son Sadashiva Nayaka added the Rangamantapa. According to a legend, Chowdappa Nayaka found a lingam buried in an anthill on which his cow was shedding its milk everyday. It is said that the Keladi temple was built around this sacred Lingam.

On entering inside the complex you notice transformation into a very old structure. The temple houses three deities, Lord Rameswara (Linga and Nandi), Lord Veerabhadra and Lord Ganesh. The pillars are superbly adorned with legendary gods as well as animals. At the ceiling you can find the legendary (imaginary) two headed bird called Garudabande.

The Ramesvara temple consists of a Garbhagriha, Pradakshinapatha, Antarala a Navaranga and a Mukhamantapa in east-west axis. The square Garbhagriha has no decorations it has a Ramesvara linga of black stone on the Peetha. Garbhagriha doorway has Ramesvara with other decorations. The Antarala provides space for circumambulation and pillars which have bas-relief sculptures of lotus, lion-face etc.

The outer walls rise over the horizontal friezes or round moldings and the uppermost one is decorated. The walls and plain expect for a pilaster and a bas-relief sculpture. This is repeated on all the sides. Over this is broad eave at angle over which is a molding with a parapet. Over and above is the Sikhara of the Chalukya-Vesara type. The architecture of the temple is unique and has influences of Kadamba, Hoysala and Dravidian styles. Stupi is slightly elongated.

The Navaranga has fine pillars almost similar to later Chalukyan or Hoysala pillars with a square base. The Mukhamandapa has series of pillars with Kakshasanaa, which are broad and convenient to sit and watch the rituals and dance. TheMukhamandapa has three entrances at north, west and south with flight of steps with balustrades on either side. And also I found the statue of Rani Channamma.. Underneath Lord Ganesh, Rani Chenamma is paying respect accompanied by her consorts.

There are many sculptures which adorn this temple among which mention should be made of Bedara Kannappa, Garuda, amorous couples, Harihara, musicians playing on instruments, animals like monkey,camel,elephant,serpent, and dancers etc. At the back of the temple complex that is more or less facing the entrance a picture of Vaastu sketched on full wall panel. There exists a massive Manasthamba at the backyard of temple. This indicates the temple could have been altered subsequently in accordance with Vaastu guidance.

The interiors of the Keladi temple can surprise the visitor as it looks rather nondescript from outside. Popularly known as the Keladi Rameshwara Temple, the temple complex encloses a Parvati shrine, a Rameshwara shrine and a Veerabhadra shrine. The roof and pillars of the Parvati Temple have intricate carvings on wood. Thus the Ramesvara temple is a structure built at the beginning of the Nayak rule and hence it occupies an important place in understanding the Kealdi style of architecture. This is a popular temple and attracts devotees from all over Karnataka.

AGHORESVARA TEMPLE, Ikkeri

Aghoresvara temple is a rectangular structure built of stone. It is built on a platform. The temple consists of a Garbhagriha, Open Sukhanasi and a Mandapa. The basement itself is six feet height and contains five different mouldings of Kirtimukhas and lion faces with indented shape with projections here and there. This remains us of the Hoysala style. Over the platform with some space all round rises the wall of the temple with Devakoshthas containing sculptures of gods and goddess. The large number of pilasters makes the temple wall very attractive. Near the roof is a decorated eave. Over the Garbhagriha is the slender Sikhara which has decorated mouldings of various types.

The kings of Keladi who were the subordinates of the Vijayanagara empire, became independent at the end of 16^th century and ruled as independent kings till the last part of 18^th century A.D., in parts of Malenadu and costal Karnataka. Ikkeri was their capital for sometimes and they built the Aghoresvara temple here.

The Keladi kings followed a distinct style of architecture combining the elements of Hoysala, Vijayanagara and Sarcenic features. This is well known as Ikkeri style and the Aghoresvara temple built in about 1520 A.D, is a good example of this style. Today Ikkeri is a small village wit ruined buildings, forts, temples and palaces. During the period of the Ikkeri Nayakas it was a prosperous city.

The walls of the Mandapa also have friezes which contain decoration of monkeys, swans, amorous scenes and series of miniature Gopuras. The series of shallow niches on the walls at the upper level makes the walls attractive. The niches contain Dikpalas, Vishnu, Bhairava etc. The doorways also are highly decorative. There are flights of steps with elephants as balustrades. There is Pradakshinapatha from the Sukhanasi.

The pillars of the Mandapa show a variety. There is a Sivalinga inside the Garbhagriha called Aghorescara a form of Shiva. To the west is the shrine of goddess Parvati. The doorways and windows have pointed arches which perhaps is a Islamic influence. The nandimandapa has a finely carved Nandi. Thus Aghoresvara temple is a good testimony to the architectural and sculptural tradition of the rulers of Keladi at their one-time capital Ikkeri.

There is an interesting play of colors in the temple as it exists today. What I am not sure about is if this was always like this or the temple was of Red or Green or brown beige color and the heavy rains in this region have played their part. There are sculptors that carry a distinct deep red color, beneath them a panel has a dark green color and then the usual brown beige. On the first look you are tempted to think that it is red or green stone, but when you go closer you realize that the single stone probably can not have all the three colors. Probably the stones were colored and I again have to bank on my wild imagination to think what color it would have been conceived by the original makers of this temple.

I am also intrigued by the technique that would have been used to color the stones, as the color still stands bright and alive even after centuries of heavy rainfall on it. Sometimes the images give an impression of being cast in metal and its only when you touch them that you know that they are stone. The carvings are intricate, the curves proportionate and the expressions dedicated.

There is an interesting myth engraved in this temple. On the left hand side outer wall, there is a Scorpio and two lizards engraved. Between the two lizards is a line dividing them. It is said that when the lizards cross this line are able to touch each other, the world would come to an end. Though cast on stone, I must say that the lizards are not too far apart. This may or may not have been a part of the original temple as it does not gel with the rest of the fine sculpture and is very raw as if carved by a novice.

The Journey into Amazing Caves... Part-2

Ballalana cave was a natural bunch of extraordinary rock formalized caves group connecting with myth and historical background. Some legend says that Hoysala king Ballala built few steps in front the cave entrance and ruled this surrounding places and one fine day got disappeared in cave, evidence of this still we can see the exterminated forts and ruined construction in various parts of the Shola-Grasslands. The dread of the supernatural which preserved this cave from outer disturbance even local villagers also frighten to wander around this place so still this place is enrich and hygienic.

I scared to enter this atrocious cave also I heard past experience from our guide he told nobody knows the profound of the cave even few years back he tried to explore this cave with some guys with adequate equipments but he frightened to climb down further downward levels. Lack of time& information we forgot to bring Torch, rope and enough foods, I dint expected to face such a strange cave without any preparation. So I dint show much interest on look into the cave.

My friend Ashok already had climb down the first level without any help from the 3^rd cave entrance. It boosted me to do cave expedition so I too find the way from 2^nd cave to reach him and I joined him at 1^st base after a very risky hard attempt.

With some difficulty for it was very dark and the whole place seemed so strange to us on dark we dint find any way to further level except the dipping water such a silence it was. I felt strange ambiance on that. . Rest of my teammates tried to join us but they couldn’t succeed they returned back..

We find an abrupt narrow approach from our left side but in dark we couldn’t see how deep it was. We throw some stones on deep and heard the reverberation back on few seconds. After wavering discussion once again Ashok got ready to go further downer level with helping of Camera flash and my job had to wait his reply so I stand on the cliff edge on 1^st base.

Slowly he went down and after few minutes later he reached the 2^nd base but I was not confident even my shoes was not suitable for slick wet rocks. So I gave him moral support and looking his safe arrival.

Waiting and wishing for his safe return on a strange place was very frustrated task ever. After a great adventure he returned back and encouraged me to go down with him. As the true nature of the caves gradually revealed itself strange vigor in myself so I also followed him step by step hand by hand support. One more very deadly attempt I reached the 2^nd base which almost 100feet deep from the top. I got wonder the beauty and the shape of the cave.

Bantakallu

There was a long passages which connected to another part of the cave. The cave themselves ramify in the same irregular fashion and are to be viewed merely as the capillaries through which rain fall passes to join the main channels. Certain rocks composed of gypsum also certain caverns of the same sort as those in the lime-stones. It was the home for bats hanging on the caves wall all over.

After a few minutes walk in narrow passages journey end-up with one more deep narrow-mouthed way and we we decided to back. This cave is impossible to navigate without any light or rope and its not travel able for next level so we head for the exit took another rout which connected to 3^rd cave and did life long memorable rock climbing with my broken shoes and returned back into the wonderful sunlight!. I like to Thanks Ashok and God at the same time which made this cave expedition successful.

On return the rugged terrains would endurance for each step of the way and it’s always blanketed in lush greenery. The variation in landscape allows the scope for both an arduous as well as a leisurely trek. All of it, all of the jagged rock, the incredible cliff bands, the outrageous climbs and drops,Undiscovered natural caves all of that it was an exotic getaway, nestled in the midst of Shola forests in Western Ghats.

In September 2011 I made a 1day trip to the Charmadi Grasslands with my group through a hard bike ride. Throughout our journey went through rolling hills and forest areas for the last few minutes in tough driving in rough boulder mud road, by 10AM we reached to the famous Kala Bhairaveshwara temple which built during Chola period we found a safe spot to park our bikes near the temple.

It was a grassy hill ranges covered this small village and it was my second visit to this village. Last time I had hike to Karadibetta track from this place and this time I planed to explore few new places on the same track. Due to lack of information we decided to find some resourceful person about this land and finally by luck & god's grace we were able to get one tribal very well known person from this village. And the interesting thing was that only he knew about the Ballalana Cave.

Around a short walk form the base we reached 'Madle Marada Kambayi' a small open view point with a 100 years old tree. We enjoyed the fantastic panorama of the mountains deep valleys and magnificent view from that. We took a long ramble in the hills on next 45 minutes and reached to Katimettida Kallu a wide rocky grassland area. Like myth says still we can seen few steps of Bison on hard rock. We had spent some time on that rock & filled some water near by the stream and had little snacks to increase our energy level.

One of the greatest joys in the life of a backpacker is to walk along a ridge line. That line that marks the very top of the mountains where you can climb no more and you get to enjoy the thousands of feet of space below. It is to experience the world from the top, to truly bask in the adventure of your life, this is what it is all about, and for me perhaps the greatest part of what we did.

Throughout the last section, we have been blessed to walk along some of the best most unseen grasslands, and certainly most rugged ridge lines. We passed a variety of Biodiversity rich Shola-grasslands, the surrounding mountains form a micro climate that all made a very nice walk…The attraction of these mountains cannot be expressed in words. Be it trekking in the Shola forests, climbing those beautiful hillocks, crossing numerous streams or simply roaming the countryside and solely revel in nature's beauty.

The hike was delightful with varieties of flowers in bloom. There also many brightly colored insects in the forest, such as turquoise and colorful dragonflies as well as a number of species of large, unusually shaped and colored beetles. It’s also home to many wild and endangered species of animals and varieties birds rarely found elsewhere. After a long walk inside the canopy of grass we reached the edge of the Grassland and few minutes downer walk we saw some ruined existence of houses and forts which belongs to the Ballalaraya.

Thick fog covered the whole area and all turned into more dramatic beauty on a span of time. Finally we made successful to find 3 beautiful unbeknown caves in the edge of the the rocky cliff. We had a beautiful vista from the top of the cave which was greatly soothing and gives a peaceful mood. It made us to forget all our worldly worries.

Godachinmalki waterfalls

Spending a refreshing time in Gokak falls we headed to another wonderful falls nearby this. A few kilometers easy journey we left vechile in safe and followed the muddy path towards falls. Clearly there was a formal trail down here as I saw a cairn down at the creek bed and I followed the trail was a bit muddy and slippery from the drizzling rain.

After nearly a half-hour of walking this far only heared the georgeous sound of the roraing waterfalls Then slippery and muddy path where some flimsy walkway was supporting us to stand in-front of the pretty cascade nestled in a serene setting whose silence was only broken by the clapping of the falls.

This falls is formed by Markandeya River and is 50 ft height unlike Gokak falls, the drop is not sudden, the water cascades on different steps before falling into the valley. We went the vast surface rocky area which very near to the falls and felt the full glimpse of milky falls were water was falling with huge volume.

On the surface once more we gulped fresh air into our hungry lungs and gazed out at the open vista around us. waterfalls is so rapturously beautiful that almost all are smitten at first sight and end up spending hours here as we did. this falls could very well be one of the most enchanting in Belgoa distict.

The spray was so Intense that for a long distance we were drenched to the skin even though the falls wasn't tall, it still generated enough mist to make photography a bit difficult. So I took the obligatory photos before I huffed and puffed my way up the steep and somewhat slippery ascent back to the trail. If time was not short I would have go further to explore.

The dazzling sight of the falls was simply amazing there is nothing quite as relaxing as standing at red rock during the peak rain, watching the falls flowing over the sandstone buttresses was really eye-popping and heart touching.

Kamalanarayana Temple – Degaon

It was my unanticipated unplanned visit to Kamalanarayana Temple we reached this place at unusual time but still we had enjoyed the breathtaking stunning this temple, it’s really amazing to have such a glorious temple belonging to the ancient times and this is a place worth to showcasing. What we admire today is a ligancy of our ancient people handed down to the generations that have followed and are yet to come and each delicately carved figure was a testament to the rich talent of those forgotten sculptors whose chisels and hammer converted simple stones into such everlasting works of art..

The Kamala Narayana Templeple at Degaon is one of the best monuments which situated at unassuming little village. The place name might have originated from its temple complex Devagrama meaning a village of God..

The striking monument here is the magnificent Kamala Narayana Temple, built by Tippoja, the architect of God Bankesvara at the command of Kamala Devi, the queen of the Goa Kadamba King Sivachitta, in the middle of the 12th century. These wise moves ensured that even today 9 centuries later while exploring on here we could experience the same solitude and place that allowed those ancient cultures and peoples.

It’s built on an unusual plan as it has three shrines and the principal one is located inside a long hall which has an open verandah with a sloping roof resting on ten pillars. While this temple with its lovely pillar designs and eye-catching symmetry was delighting and it quicken my pulse.

The back of the temple shows the two shrines wide apart. The walls are decorated with projecting pillars and horizontal bands of moldings. The shrines are not roofed by superstructures. The temple is rectangular in shape and consists of three cells with the pillared hall running from North to South in front of the shrines on the west side.

Each of these shrines is divided into two parts, Garbhagriha and Sukhanasi. The frames of the doorways of the Sukhanasi are carved with creepers. The pieced stone windows which surround the doorways are more ornamental than in any other Kadamba temple.

The Garbhagihas have, as in other Kadamba temples, the dedicatory block with the image of Gaja-Lakshmi. The first cell contains the image of Narayana. The second cell has the icon of Lakshmi-Narayana with Lakshmi seated on the lap of Vishnu. Garuda and Maruti are standing on either side of this image. The third cell bears the image of Kamala Narayana with two attendants on either side.

The walls of the temple are adorned with niche having plasters surmounted by terraced pyramidal towers in the Kadamba style crowned with a Kalasha. The ceiling has pendant lotuses, all of them artistic pieces of workmanship remarkable for richness of ornamentation and elaboration of details.

The distinguishing feature of the Kadamba style is the tapering terraced tower, a perfect pyramid, the vigorous and purposeful line of each of these terraces attracting the eye even from a long distance. The Kadamba style would seem to have reached its perfection in the ''Kamala Narayana Temple at Degamve. It is a typical example of a temple built in this style which had come under the Hoysala influence.

On returned we took local food we tried Rotti with local curries in one small hotel. Rotti is sort of a staple food. The dish itself is rather bland, and I wondered how something as tasty as this. It does provided a peaceful sight with excellent unsullied experiences to see on the end of the journey.

Gokak Falls

After a long traveling we occupied a nice place to stay for a night at Gokak. Gokak is one of the most important cultural heritage site as well as one of the places with huge waterfalls and lots of industries. We slept early so we could wake up early and land for Gokak waterfalls which was just 20 minutes journey from the Gokak city unfortunately we had 1 hour late because of our cab driver.

After a smooth nap having complementary continental breakfast, we headed out to Gokak falls. A small journey from hotel we parked our vehicle in front of the 125years old Textile mill and stepped down to visit beautiful Mahalingeswara (Tateshwara) temple. The temples built in the Later Chalukyas style of architecture situated at on the south side of the falls and It faces north an unusual orientation for Shiva temples.

It was very well maintained and the gorgeous waterfalls presence in-front of temple was adorning its premise. It has a sanctuary with a Mandapa the outer walls of the closed hall are from recent times. After rounding the temple complex we climbed down for few steps and reached right side corner of the upper cascade, which situated next to the temple. The natural cataracts are quite beautiful, plunging with white foam over dark rock into iridescent yellow pools. Here River hurtles along through a narrow wide rock gorge overhung into the beautiful ragged valley.

I saw a beautiful view from the edge of the cascade and also I saw an old power generation stattion here electricity was generated for the first time in the country in 1887 were exactly bottom side from the cliffs. Later we crossed a very old (201 meters) hanging bridge It was a fantastic experience on standing middle of the bridge and having a full glimpse of the dazzling Ghataprabha river which takes 170 feet leap over a sandstone cliff in a picturesque george with a thunderous sound was so enjoyable to spend some time on that.

We’d crossed the river and found few older temples Datttreya and Shiva temple. The outer temple wall was not in good condition but somewhere inside was filled with modern paints hastily but still I was able to take some good photos of that. After visiting the temple I turned to waterfalls and joined my team, we had better view of the waterfalls from this part. We'd continued our risky climb down further until we got yet another interesting view of cascade.

We passed by a narrowing of the gorge where the creek was louder and interesting red rock formations could be seen below the trail. Obviously it was difficult to photograph very closer to the cascade, but still we were amazed that such scenery could exists in-front of us so we didn’t hesitate to take photos instead of drizzling rain and mist.

However, the scramble to the base of the falls was a bit steep so we couldn’t able to reach bottom but somewhere got better views of the cascade and valleys. After lot of enjoyment we headed back to starting point and had visit textile mill and our lady teammates had purchase enough cloths on a discount price.

Gokak falls the area features colorful red hillsides with beautiful waterfalls its location amazing to see such a collection of people, buildings, temples, rivers, etc. here. It’s nice to be in such a beautiful place and we had spent a great joyful time in this location still, the experience of feeling the power of the falls from the overlooks as well as getting nervously close to the rush of water without railings sure made us crazy…

Sogala - A feast for the eyes...

Sogal hills was one of the most under- appreciated aspects of visiting most important cultural heritage site as well as one of the places of waterfalls, beautiful hill ranges, unusual scarlet rock formations are richly rewarded with incredible nature and it was a chance at seeing the real beauty of a wonderful place in life time…

When we reached the Sogala a gorgeous 80 feet high waterfall welcomed us with its big pond. The waterfalls view was very pleasant with its surrounding red mountains and huge red cliffs and back side greenish paddy fields all were so delightful was once we forgotten everything for a while.

After a heartfelt sight of the waterfalls we stepped for next spot. After few stepping up we reached to the hillside, were we seen many temples, including the Someshwara temple, and it was a great antiquarian interesting place, It is perhaps the most popular attraction of Someswara Temple’s Interior and outer door wall.

The temple is made from carved stone and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple was constructed on Rashtrakuta’s period. The name of the place is ascribed to a sage, Sugola Muni, who is believed to have lived in the area, but one inscription speaks of Sovala. We spotted and the black faced monkeys and normal monkeys around the hill and temple premises.

Local folklore states that tigers came to Sogal to listen to the religious teachings. Other legends include a nearby Kalyanmantapa (temple), now renovated, where the marriage of Shiva and Parvati is said to have taken place all this reminiscent of the harsher times of the Saga Age.

Later we headed to deer park were maintained by forest department. Eastern side we find few more temples like Sri GuruMatananda Samadhi temple and a dilapidated condition cave temple and a stone Surya-Chandra shrine also here. On the hill to the east of Sogal is an old fortification, now in ruins, locally referred to as Kadambarayan Kote perhaps named after Kadamba King but we couldn’t able to trace this place.

We made enough adventures activities in this hill ranges in our own way it was very interesting aspects with great panoramic views, here forest also vaguely different with thick vegetation we had some beautiful countryside outlook from southern end of the hill range.

Fascinating fiery red hiils

With the relative low population density, ecosystems and a vast variety of landscape features, we had adventurous enough to experience such delightful sightings of rare birds and animals and extra-ordinary countryside views, the Sogal hills, and the waterfalls in places that have yet to be crushed by mass developments somehow in few parts were effected by some insightful intuitive development activities but still enough to hold its attraction for nature as well as spiritual lovers. As the day wore down we headed back with enjoyable pleasing memories ….

Dramatic green paradise- Malemane & Apsaragonda waterfalls (Part-2)

After a well deserved breather we found the way to boost next step. defined rolled fashioned out of trees routs, Me and my trekking companions crawling up a steep rock surface somewhere we took help of roots and we were greeted by a glossy black rock face mocking with slippery, scattered footholds in the form of holes chiseled the giant solid rocks. The terrain was rough- slick sloping rock blocks, loose mud and unexposed path. We were fortunate not to suffer any major injuries.

In the end we continued for a while until I realize there was no easy way to reach top. So after exploring for 30 minutes turning around in lush bushes I headed to the top. I tried that and ended up ascending all the way to the creek where I found a couple of large logs right where I needed to cross.

After that, a short risky bushwhack took us right to the base (5^th step) of the waterfall. I think the only word I can say about the view is spectacular. A glorious sight, if live to see it but thanks to the strategically exquisite situation of this location if won’t have to run the risk unless have the typical guts.

We stayed there for quite some time admiring the scenery and the waterfalls before continuing down back .We took a short break there before heading back down as we knew we still had a long way to go. After a enough water sports retraced our steps back thru the new trail. After a short walk on the upper-side and passing the huge stony area, we found a ridge line that seemed doable to climb up but it was ended with nowhere.

We lost the trail in abandon wild forest and started climbing a bit downer side thinking that we could scramble up and make it. We had to switch back and forth many times as we walked on downed trees, bushes that have been carved to form the path. At some point, almost on top of the mounds, we found ourselves climbing down next to a fallen tree that almost seemed like it was put there so you could climb down. After a hard attempt we found a paled jeep track and a long walk we reached the starting point.

Apsaragonda waterfalls

I can say I’m happy I finally made the wonderful trip to Malemane waterfalls but somehow have the feeling I didn’t explore everything I wanted to explore more. So I guess I will have to come up with yet another trip to this area. The only thing is, having done this trail 2 times already; I need to give it a rest for a while. Perhaps next time I will approach it from a different route.

We had our lunch at my friend house in Honnavar and on back we glimpsed the beauty of Apsaragonda waterfalls and beach garden. Returned saner fitter and in love with life again may be it’s the fresh air, surprise drizzles, greenery....

Dramatic green paradise- Malemane waterfalls (Part-1)

Rainy trek, even though not as popular as any other like Joga,, was a refreshing experience to encounter the wilderness from a close quarter and the enjoying the nature of Western ghat. Trekking in western ghat at rainy offers in pounding rains all through the trek, chilling weather, unique wildlife bewitching beauty of water falls will charge with an utmost energy level.

I visited Malemane waterfalls long back in a well winter season. In my first visit I finished the voyage till the 1^st step with incomplete sense. After a long 6 years of waiting once again I had chosen to explore this wonderful place on this fine Monsoon with Ashok and Sunil on 20^th of August 2011.

We left Udupi at late noon and stayed night at convent place and we set off next day morning caught first bus to this place and 1 hour easy journey we reached the famous Veranjaneay temple had a grace of God Anjeneya and later anther 7kms journey on the same track we reached our initial spot.

We lay down from bus and relaxed for while from the road side we spotted the gorgeous Malemane waterfalls between thick Malemane Ghat forest ranges which dipping down from almost 400 feet striking height. We took some long shots of the waterfalls from the road; my friends weren’t willing to believe we are going to explore such a wonderful waterfalls was situated between such a dangerous dense jungle.

Once we got close to the creek, the trail got interesting Initial trail was pleasant in ambiguous slippery boulders jeep track were small streams crossing across the tracks and plunging into the right side of the main stream. We crossed few such streams and reached the main stream bed. The river volume was very high and rough but water was very clear and sanitize on such peak monsoon.

Main stream was overflowing and thick shrubs were covered the track so we decided to cross the main river with hand chain supporting. 20 minutes non-stop walk we reached to the first step of the waterfalls. It was stunning view from the bottom of the waterfalls were we enjoyed like a small kids.

Our next attempt was really crazy, mad some and hazardous exciting actions. No any routs will go after the 1^st step. We had only 2options on our mind first one is to climb 1^st step of the waterfalls from its bottom (In my 1^st visit I had climbed like so) but volume was high so we dropped the fist choice.

Last chance was that to climb 90 degree muddy rock heap from right side of the waterfalls and we were confront by a near vertical climb we started 30-40 feet height steep summit by one by one helping each other. I should thanks to Ashok because he made it to successful such foolish attempt it was.

But smile not stayed for long after small walk in shrubbery uphill abrupt fronts, one more rugged range which slightly less risky compared to first one. But here Sunil find some difficulty after climbing me and Ashok the track became lousier and dangerous but god helps finally he managed to climb from his own innovative track holding with small branches and routs. Finally we entered into thick dark jungle immediate right side top of the 1st step.

The most thrilling unprintable walk would started from this part we chosen dense tropical forest area instead of following the risky upper stream side, so we planed our own strategy and followed our own direction through the dense rainforest land to have a view of the main waterfalls.

Our journey went interesting in each step through extending beautiful stretches of forest. After 2 hours walk it provides spectacular views of the waterfalls on gap between 2 ridges while crossing one edge of the mountain.

It strengthens our enthusiasm and encourages us with new power. In one place we decided to climb down and follow the stream but we got shocked because here water flows rashly between 2 sharp rocks and plunges into 30feet down but it seems very dangerous to go downer. So we dropped second step and had take one more risky rout.

At one place watercourse would passing between huge boulders and we decided to climb edge of the rock holding on wet rocks, trees, roots whatever we could find as rain and wind lashed at us. After a very risky attempt we finally made it to the small plateau on top of the 3^rd step of the waterfalls. A rock climb in the rain at dusk without any safeguards and equipments might seems lunacy but this was what the trek to Malemane waterfalls demands when after a serious of stretches of trekking up.

Manoli, Panchlingeshwara Temple.

After a comfy journey we had reached Manoli village at 2A.m. Manoli or Munavalli is a beautiful ancient city with religious and historical background. It was also a famed center with some famous Saints (Munis) were lived and faith guided in different activities. Evidence of this still we can see some status of Sages inside the Panchalingeswara Temple and also can see several old spiritual institutions (Muth's) on this village. It was not mere religious tolerance but active religious co-existence.

Nature has been gracious in Manoli of the land with supporting Malaprabha river. The Panchalingeswara temple is assemblage of Ten antithetic temples under one huge temple complex . As inscriptions dated 1145 & 1174A.D., the temple and nearest fort belongings to the Devagiri ruler Singhandeva.

Various dynasties that ruled here were patrons of art and architecture. As result of their efforts Manoli has been dotted with beautiful temples and forts.

The main temple dedicated to lord Shiva. This is a Ekakuta temple having with one Garbhagriha, Navaranga and beautiful Mukhamantapa. In Sanctum 5 Lingas situated in one Peeta (basement). The sculptures of Ganesha, Kali and Saptamatrikas were carved uniqueness of art tradition inside the main temple.

The outer wall, Shikara and inner ceilings and pillars were not much ornamented in these temples but sad thing is that whole area was painted badly and rubbishy without any sense. I saw 4-5 Hoysalas symbols on the top of the few temples in the same temple complex. We visited each temples and had spent enough time and enjoyed calmness of this area.

I impressed by the beauty of Devi and Kalabhairava sculptures with its great jewelery decoration and ornamentation. The sculpture of Kalabhairava is a great beauty, charm, ornamented and magnitude. The excavations of the Kalabhairava gave me a glimpse into the architecture and sculpture of that period..

This trip has made us to bring back to ancient times and its reflected Hindus traditions and arts and the remembrance of artists and sculptors of the past who have made us worthy inheritors of great culture. After visiting this glorious temple we headed to explore few more historical places in limited time.

Panchalingesvara Temple, Hooli.

After Saudatti visit we headed to the grand temple complex of Hooli. Hooli or ancient Hoovalli (Village of flowers) in Belgaum district has great antiquity going back to the seventh century A.D., as evidenced by Badami Chalukya epigraphs.

It was ancient Agrahara and a great educational center where different subjects were taught by famous scholars. The education center was so big that it had many streets where lived separate groups of people including scholars. It was also a renowned Kalamukha center with some famous saints of that faith guiding the socio-religious activities.

The Panchalinga temple is most famous at this place. As the name itself signifies it is the holy abode of five Lingas with five Garbhagrihas. Actually Panchalinga temples are rare in Karnataka. The temple consists five Garbhagrihas, Sukhanasi, a Navaranga and an open Mukhamandapa.

Actually the three Garbhagries are in a row at the back and one Garbhagriha each on the other two sides, thus making a total of five sanctums. This is the uniqueness of this temple. To the right of the central Garbhagriha are Mandapas which have the images of Ganapathi and Vishnu. The five Grabhagries have small Sikharas of the Kadamba Nagara Type, popular in this region.

The outer walls of the Garbhagriha are indented and plain without decorations. But the indented surface itself is pleasing. At the bottom is a plinth of thick horizontal moldings of dentil ornamentation. Above the wall are found two horizontal ornamented bands over which rises the Shikara.

The open Mukhamaqndapa is a highly elegant structure with Kakshasanas inside. Square based octagonal pillars are a great attraction in this temple. The outer pillars are placed on parapet with moldings with low-relief sculptures. This Mandapa is highly conspicuous by its large inclined eave made up of stone slabs, placed in an angle. Over this is a roundish molding with a flat roof. Inside the Navaranga are found Saptamatrika slab and images of Vishnu, Bhirava, Ranganatha, Varaha, Siva etc.

The temple has many inscriptions which throw light on the history of the temple. The Navaranga of the temple has an inscription dated 1181 A.D., belonging to the Kalachuri ruler Ahavamalla, son of Bijjala which records the gift of watershed to the temple. Hence this temple should have been built 1181 A.D. Another inscription is of the time of Chalukya Vikramaditya VI.

Thus this is an elegant Kalyana Chalukya temple in Hooli. This temple stands as evidence to what once must have been a great center for temple architecture and hints at what the other ruined temples would have looked like when they were still standing in their original glory.

Off we go bare footed in the by lanes by village we come across a little structure in complete ruins. A little distance we are greeted by the awesome site many temples scattered around on the hillock across the stream. The many other temples scattered around the village are in dire need of restoration and protection. I heard that most of the temples have their floor dug up for the hunt for treasure so much is lost and stolen.

Other than Panchlingeswara temple Hooli has many other old temples are – Andakeswara temple, Bhavanisankara temple, Kalmeswara temple, Kashi Vishwanatha temple, Madaneswara temple, Suryanarayana temple, Tareswara temple,Sangameswara Ajjanavaru temple, Beerdevar Temple. Even at remotest location on the hills has couple of temples.

Lack of time we left Hooli fort and rest of all beautiful temples and we headed to Sirsangi Kallika temple. After a small journey we reached one of the very popular temples belongs to one community. Outer was renovated so not much to see but inner part of the temple once can amazed by the sculptures and carvings on the stone.

Here Photography is restricted but still we manage to take few beautiful snaps of a couple of statues. After having a grace of Goddess Kali we headed to explore few more beautiful places with new spirit.

Saudatti - Sanctified Pearl of North....

The whole trip was planned in a short time by dividing all responsibilities among each team member and finally by everyone’s support it became a beautiful and memorable trip. Keeping in mind with our hectic schedule, we left Hubli. On the way we had breakfast hastily and after about 90 minutes of uneventful journey, we reached Saudatti one of the oldest town in Belgaum district.

There was a beautiful Fort welcomed us at the entrance of the village which is about 5 kms before reaching Yellamma temple. The road was being unsealed in sections. The History says Saundatti fort was actually built by Jayappa Desai of the Navalgund Sirasangi Samsthan in between 1743-51 with 8 bastions. Later the fort was designed by Hyder Ali of Mysore and the Desai had to transfer his allegiance over to him.

Saundatti fort is one of the biggest fort in north Karnataka. The outer walls and bastions of the fort are still intact after all these years and are a testimony of its strong construction. First we visited Kadasiddheshwara temple which situated at the middle of the fort, surrounded by four bastions. Around the Kadasiddheshwara temple in the inner Prakara there is a row of beautiful carvings of geometrical patterns with over two hundred designs, some painted.

The temple premises looks wonderful and the view of the village from the top is breathtaking and its worth the effort spent in climbing around 20 steps. We explored every bit of the temple and had the aarti done by the priest. There are lawns and gardens created at every corner of the fort. There is also a playground created for children. We explored every nook of the fort watching Saudatti city from top of the fort was eye-catching.

Later we visited Satyamma temple & Siddarakolla a dry waterfalls on the way to Yellamma temple.The century-old temple is situated atop Yellamagudda, amidst picturesque Ramalinga Hills about 5km from Savadatti. I always avoid crowded places, temples included, but I do not know what made me visit Yellamma temple. We got Devi's Darshana, and went around the temple and car-street.

Yellamma is a very popular and potent goddess in North Karnataka and south Maharashtra, and majority people visiting are devout followers. Trance women, men and even kids are a common sight. A large number of folks also appear to be festival time. There is also a dark side to it. A lot of young girls are married off to gods. Devdasi is the term used to describe them. It means female servant of God. Unfortunately, a lot of these girls end up doing prostitution.

Worse, on the festival day, young girls used to be dedicated as Devadasis, a practice which used to drive them into prostitution. With a ban on the practice imposed two decades ago, the dedication has now gone underground, away from the gaze of the law and disapproving non-governmental organizations.

In the recent past, activists tried to persuade the devotees not to follow these superstitious practices and check Devadasi system and even succeeded to a certain extent, in cajoling the women to wear the bangles, instead of breaking them. However, the practice was resumed with vigor.

The rituals, including the dedication of young girls are observed on the sly. We missed few places like Puradeswara and Ankeswara temples Naviluteertha dam, Parasghad fort because of several reason. After completing the Saudatti we forwarded to our next holy destiny point...

Pertaining to waterfalls in Rainy

After a long wait finally I made my first Monsoon trek this year. This is my third visit to the same place but its quite interesting in this ever changing nature. This time We preferred bikes as our plan was on Sunday early morning. We 3 (I, Ashok & Chandru) started our journey with 2 bike.

Initial journey was quite pleasant with nice upwind Unfortunately when we hit the mountain road heavy rain started and not just a shower, it was like being at home, drizzle with some heavy stuff chucked in. It was pouring everywhere many small waterfalls were plunging either side of the ghat road. I found myself winding through the steep valleys and gorges, I had to focus on not to crash as the view was so breathtaking really I enjoyed the ride in my own imaginative world.

This time we changed our regular rout , Villagers suggest another rout that was little longer because of heavy rain old regular rout was bad and was flooded by nearby stream.. After a long ride we took a right turn into the boggy road. Lucky enough the main road was surfaced but the others where just mire and was fully unpaved, muddy, slippery, bumpy, some places were very deep and narrow. Some places were very difficult to drive in deep layer of soft mud after a lot of risk and hard attempts we reached our destiny point.

We left our bikes and headed into wast greenish afloat paddy fields surrounded by mountain .After crossing we entered into the rainforest. It only took 15 minutes of walking through pristine mountain forest we reached the stunning first stage of the waterfalls.

After admiring the falls we started to climb against the downhill waterfalls some places we climbed the sideways of the fall. The final trek route runs through thick forest and includes rock climbing. The trek from first fall to the 5th fall includes steeper trek that runs through forest, water and rocks.

The gushing main cascade tumbling down the massive rock face and greenery with dense vegetation on either side of the falls. After a good soaking rain waterfalls flowing at their peak, filling the air with mist as they tumbled out of the forest, splashed over boulders, and dropped down ledges before finally plunging into a pool.

We took our obligatory photos later we decided to venture even further so we crossed the stream and started to hike uphill. We could barely see the trail through the leaves and fallen branches. But we stuck to it, if only to see if the next intersection would give us a clue to where we were the trail wrapped around a marsh and disappeared into a patch of mud. But just beyond the thick shrub we spotted the upstream and after a great circus we had reached the deadend point on top of the waterfalls.

Here water was plunging onto the escarpment with white foam over dark rock into iridescent blue pool was totally quite beautiful.The top the trek up the hills into the forest and view from top of the falls gave us some really good views of the valley. The sight and sound of a waterfall soothes,relaxes,refreshs and recharges one's senses.

This magnificent waterfall is located in deep forest near Kodachadri hill a series of 5 falls, one above the other, in splendid surroundings makes it one of the best waterfalls in rainy season.

While returning throughout the area we ended up seeing more villages including their buffalo wallowing in the mud lot of activities. One of the nicest ways to enjoy the sights and smells of fresh forest Crispness of cold air is on a motorcycle, especially if the roads traveled have more twisties and less vehicles.

Joga Gundi...(Jog Falls)

Jog falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India formed by Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 m (830 ft) ; it is also called as Gerusoppe falls and Jogada Gundi. Of course this is one of my favorite which I forgot to post. I have visited this place since I was a child still whenever is possible. Joga is one of the best idle places to visit and the most charming place on earth.

The majestic Jog Falls which falls from such a great height is a mesmerizing sight.

Waterfalls tumble side by side split by 4 called as Raja, Rocket, Rani and Roarer and backed by mountains hinting at the wildness of Sharavathi's backcountry views. Such tall and permanent waterfalls don't come like this often and it was easy to approach.

Madhu Kaitabha Temple – Kotipura

Flipping through the pages of history, one comes across many ancient towns and temples with passage of time, the significance of these temples may have faded, but a closer look reveals the glories of the past. One such example is Madhu Kaitabha Temple of Kotipura.

This temple was built in 12th century by Western Chalukyans and at later stages Keladi dynasty seems to be associated with construction of this temple. The temple complex at Kotipura reminds of Chalukyan style of construction.

As we walked towards the temple, we were overwhelmingly attracted by its calm beauty. Just as one enters the complex, on the left side lays a small temple below the ground level which innovated recently. Apart from the main temple complex which is filled with pillared structure to keep the roof from collapsing. Considering heavy rainfall in the region, it must have been a real challenge to build a temple which would not crumble due to leakage.

ASI resurrected some portions of the temple to prevent collapse. The layout of the temple complex seems to be well laid out by ASI, with numerous small Mantaps which may have been salvaged from nearby area to protect against vandalism. The Pillars and walls is quite superb sight.

It is 3 kms away from Kubetoor on the state highway proceeding towards Balligave. Basically there are 3 routes to reach this destination. One is from Balligavi up north around 25 kms, Next is via Jade towards Annavati via Kubetoor village on to the state highway towards Balligavi 15 kms. Next is obviously via Annavati or togarshi from NH 4.

I spent enough time inside the temple complex with my Udupi YHA team, I felt as if the worries of the world have been completely left behind and this magnificent piece of architecture made me ecstatically happy.

Sangameswara -Koodli

In this rainy season I & Rajesh sir visited some places in Shimoga district. Koodli was our last targeted place as his plan we reached Koodli by late noon. First we stepped to Chintamani Narashimaswamy temple.

The temple architecture reminds one of the Chola kingdom style but less impressive. Behind the chintamani temple there is Brindavan, which seems to be samadi place of priests who have passed away. It is adorned with Tulsi enclosure and is worshipped by priests even today.

Left side to Chintamani temple there is another beautiful Hoysala temple known as Rameshwara temple. An inscription in the temple indicates that in the year 1313, the Hoysala king, Veera Ballala III provided grants to the temple is situated at the conluence of Thunga & Bhadra rever.

Behind the temple a small roofless temple with nandi denotes the exact point where the two rivers meet, and is considered to be very sacred. At sangama lord called as Sangameshwara.

Below the steps adjacent to the river bed there is a small temple at the confluence point of Tunga and Bhadra. When I reached to river bed it started pouring heavily. I took shelter under one big Aswatha tree and enjoyed the beauty of two mighty rivers and An exquisite view of the 'Sangama' makes the place more exotic..

Tunga flows from the western ghat from northwest direction and Bhadra from southwest meet to give rise to the Thungabhadra River. Because of heavy rain the water level and water force also very high.

There are two Mutts in Koodli, one belongs to Advaita philosophy Shankar Mutt and other one represents Dvaita philosophy Arya Akshoya theerta Mutt. Shankar Mutt is also known as the Koodli Sringeri Mutt. It received patronage from the Wodeyars. A well maintained cows stable is undertaken by Arya Akshoya theerta Mutt.

Koodli is located on Hole-Honnur route proceeding to Chennagiri and Chitradurga. It can be approached from Bhadravathi as well as Shimoga, almost equi-distance. Overall the visit to Koodli gives one a feeling of religious fervor but devoid of much hassling of a crowded atmosphere

When I visited the incomparable temple of Lord Gangadhareshwara located in Turuvekere, I was wondering why this grand temple is being ignored by the public and remains almost unknown to most of the people. The temple is very artistic and the temple complex is beautiful and attractive. This temple built by Mahadandanayaka Somanna and the exact date of its construction has not been ascertained.

When we reached the Gangadhareshwara temple, the temple was closed so we could only view the architecture and sculptures from the outer side. The entrance is dominated by a huge and attractive Nandi which is around 7-8 feet in height sculpted from locally available Blackstone, well known as Turuvekere Kallu, the lifelike image with finely carved beads, bells and garlands has retained its brilliance. The sculpture of the sacred bull Nandi is being polished to such an extent that one can see the reflection in it. Also, the idol is very much intact and not being ruined anywhere.

Gangadhareshwara temple has a Shiva Idol with serpent hoods carved in a single piece of stone and is considered an example of fine sculpting. The unique difference here, the Shiva Idol is carved with Ganga sitting on top of his head and one can see fountains of water being flowing in the form Prabhavali. It is the only temple which is having such depiction of Ganga and Shiva being together. Also, the Uthsava Murthy made out of Bronze is having an extra eye on the right foot, which also is a unique in nature.

The eastern door has some wonderful features. The large Grey bell which is around 2 feet in diameter hanging from the ceiling is hew out of stone, but when struck gives a clear metallic note. Just below the bell is the carving of Bedara Kannappa offering his eyes to Lord Shiva .The pillars have soldiers riding rampant lions and the images of Ganapathy, Bedara Kannappa and those of Girija kalyana are all chiseled into them.

Karni Betta..

The Western-Ghats revealed themselves in every mood, aspect and form. And then, the skies opened and nature revealed itself again in familiar acceptable contours of attractiveness. Contrasts of sun, sky and clouds, flowers and vivid butterflies, a whisper of Green it was a great experience to watch the beauty of nature which can’t be explained in simple words but just imagine, standing into the wild dark unfathomable jungle with unhoped feeble condition with a happy end I prefer to remember the Karni Betta experience for a right example....

Whenever I remember Karni betta this would come to my mind because for the very first time I had such a type of experience in my life. I had visited this wonderful place few years back with my Udupi YHA team in the peak summer.

By early morning we reached Hullukudike a small village and found one local person as guide. All arrangements had been made by Mr. K S Adiga a senior experienced member of our unit so we had no need to worry about anything especially food. It was disciplined and well arranged. Our team was full of well experienced trekkers but the luck was not with us this time. Our guide missed out the route ( there was No proper rout for this place) and it took us entirely in a narrowed wrong dead end into the dense.

After a long walk on a mud road we reached the next village the weather was exceedingly hot and not endurable. There I simply asked the details about the hill but all replayed in negative. Our guide was well experienced in that region so we didn’t worry about the route we believed on his confidence and simply followed him wherever he lead.

After crossing the village we started to walk into the deep timberland. Huge trees very thick evergreen vegetation the initial forest walk was dulcet but harsh humidity on that shaded forest everyone began to get weary. After a non stop walk our energy level went down each step all our food and water got empty. when the ardor of the nonstop climb left me more hot and thirsty and some our our teammates were not able to maintain the team gap and discipline and we came to know our guide had missed the route.

The sun shaded itself and the climb was barren and rarefied but our hike never ended. Finally Adiga sir took the initiative and made a small troop to find the peak. After much climbing we reached nether of the peak it was a ridge and a Kilometer wide steep rock concatenation which was never climbed or crossed. The Sun was going to cover its face we din’t have time to think climbing the rock was not possible.. All we decided was to get down the hill as soon as possible before it was dark.

Even it was a tough task descending in lubricious terrain in dim light with low energy. After a lot of helping each other in the dark night at one point we found a water point. Then we had a small break and almost agreed to spend that night at that place but the water was not sufficient to cook for one night.

Same time few guys went down and found a foot-wide path and that route took them to the village. They returned back with few villagers and we were happily shifted to bottom side village house. In that tired out condition only Adiga sir made very delicious food. Later we made a small campfire and slept off under clear star painted blue sky. Next day we changed our plan and we went to another nice place near by the village.

Keshava Temple –Aralaguppe

The Old Testament there was a physically glorious work which was replaced by a spiritually glorious work. We sae that it was harder for those who saw the previous temple (Kalleswara) to be content when they saw the Chenna Kesava temple in Arasikere.

This temple was constructed in 13th century AD during the Hoysala period and its stands on a raised platform (4 feet high Jagati) in the centre of the village.

This is Ekakootachala temple a single celled temple, with its star shaped Garbhagriha and tower is of a simple ground plan consisting of an Antarala (vestibule), Navaranga and an entrance Ankana with an entrance porch at east and it fitted with pierced stone windows, which allows subdued light into the temple. The temple follows the contours of the Vimana and has a flight of steps in the front flanked by two miniature towers on each side.

A separate shrine is built for Narasimha at south. The wall decorations are as profuse as in any other ornate Hoysala temple the upper half of the wall shows varied forms of miniature towers, turrets on pilasters. The basement of the temple consists of the friezes of rows of elephants, Horses, Scrolls and Depiction of Puranic scenes. The walls are embellished with sculpture of Vishnu in his 24 forms flanked by other secular themes all under Patralata-torana.

The noteworthy sculptures are Naryana, Lakshmi, Dancing Ganesh, Mohini, Shadbuja-Saraswati, Venugopala, Krishna, Lakshmi-Narasimha and Ugra-Narasimha etc. Many of these sculptures have the name of the sculpture as Honnoja inscribed below them.

The Garbhagriha has a beautiful Shikara in 4 tiers of Vesara type. It is decorated with miniature turrets. At the interior the Navaranga has beautiful pillars of Hoysala architectural features. The niches on the walls have sculptures of Ganesh and Mahishamardini. There is also a sculpture of Keshava about 6 feet high. The central celing (Bhuvaneshvari) has a row of Yakshas and sculpture of Narayana flanked by Miniature turrets.

The Garbhagriha houses sculpture of Keshava of Hoysala period. The Prabhavali has miniature sculptures of Dasavataras of Vishnu. The pillars that support the navaranga and the ceilings are elaborately worked. The fine workmanship of the pillars is eye-catching.

The Vimana of this temple is in the shape of 16-pointed star and consists of Koota aedicule each one rotated by 22.5 degrees, 45 degrees, and 22.5 degrees successively. The tower of the Vimana with four Talas has a Vedike and Koota roof at the top, which follows the contours of the sanctum below. The top Kalasa is missing.

The monsoon is here :-) Now I can more close my eyes in slumber. Now I know that Monsoon showers of arrows must batter my heart. I love this season - When dark clouds cover the sky and start showering raindrops on us, I heard everyone around me saying “Ah!! Rain! Everywhere water green.

The phrase Expressions of love and happiness cannot be taught. They come to you naturally, isn’t it? Every living entity shows its love for the rains in its own way. Immediately, after the rain plants seem to be thrilled and grow much faster and greener with new branches shot up. I read in story books that peacock dance in the rain on green fields to show their happiness on arrival of monsoons.

Pours a great volume of water during different seasons...

The clouds roll and the wind picks up and when it rains - oh, blissful. It makes me want to take off my shoes and go play in the street. The pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell. The smell of first rain, the cool moist breeze on face with the sound of raindrops- priceless experience...

Truly, nature has her own way of expressing love and affection to us. During monsoon season, when tiny rain droplets fall to the ground, the sky gives an impression of mother who is shedding tears in joy on meeting her beloved children. Is it sounding my philosophical illusion, I feel its shows the kindness that nature has showered on us by creating monsoon season to enjoy :-)

Kalleshwara temple - Aralaguppe.

The Aralaguppe stands on an extensive mound and was a place of considerable importance between the 8th and 10th century AD under the Nolambas & pre- Hoysala’s Emperors. Kalleshwara temple is one of the major popular temples in this place and was built by Nolambas style of the 9^th century A.D. It represents the architectural features in which the Nolamba craftsmen show a high order of excellence and that warrant inclusion in an art historical account.

Kalleswara temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva and there is huge Lingam in the Sanctum. The Kalleshwara temple has two attractions which are worth many a visit -The extraordinary ceiling intricately carved and the sculpture of Umamaheshwara.

While the Adhishtana is made of granites, the temple's walls and towers are constructed with bricks may be a later day addition. There is an idol of Nandi in front of the main Deity of dark granite, 6 ft. in length and 4ft.in height is at the entrance.

The wall at a number of places has been ornamented by carved human figures. Its Mukhamantapa ceiling is considered the most beautiful sculpture found in the State which is something to be seen to be believed. It’s amazing but proved difficult to capture of the nine panels on the ceiling it has in Nolambas style portrayal of wonderful dancing Shiva (Tandaveswara) sculpture with musical accompanists and eight Dikpalas surrounding him depicted with their paraphernalia and vehicles.

Another unique feature of this ceiling is the flying Vidyadharas (Gandharvas), Four, with garlands in their hands at each corner of the panel. These garland-bearing Vidyadharas are quite common to Nolamba architecture; a clear evidence of the elegance and comprehensiveness of their style. The Nataraja (Tandaveswara) meanwhile, is a remarkable three-dimensional image, wearing jewels such as the Katibandana and tassels. The dancing lord is accompanied by three Bhutas playing a three-headed percussion instrument. They are also seen with Ayut and other symbols.

The northern and eastern lateral shrines contain idols of Keshava and Surya, while the southern one contains the Umasahita mounted over a large stele with a lotus pedestal and a Prabhavali with a couple of flying Vidyadharas. The extraordinary ceiling of the mukhamantapa, with the Nolambas style portrayal of Umamaheshwara at Consisting of garbagriha, antarala, and a mukhamantapa, the temple's sanctum sanctorum is adorned with a huge black-granite Shivalinga.

The outer walls are insipid without projections and recesses, but for the lone niche at the antarala that divides the Vimana from the Mukhamantapa. Pilasters built closer at the temple's interiors however, appears more refreshing.

There is also a small temple in the main temple complex which dedicated to Lord Uma Maheshwara and two more temples dedicated to the Ganapathi and Subramanya. The image of Gajalakshmi on the doorway adds charm to the place. This temple maintained by modern style but not in a systematic way.

Semblance of scenic beauty....

There might not a person who has never enjoyed the majesty and magnificence of waterfalls in this summer season. Waterfalls lend a serene touch to those witnessing them, making them spellbound and completely mesmerized. The water trickling down the hills refreshes both the mind and the body considerably.

This is one of the beautiful waterfalls in the Western Ghats region and it’s very nice in the rainy and non-rainy seasons with lot of different aspects and also one of my favorite waterfalls usually I pursuits to visit in my free time. This month 8^th a fine Sunday nippy morning we had no other option to go so once again we chose to visit OnakeAbbi Waterfalls.

After a one hour bike ride we parked our bike in a safe place and prayed to God Ganapathi in nearby temple for our safe journey. After getting a divine feelings and ideas in our hearts we turned to walk the following paved path inside the Jungle. The route takes us through unrivalled scenic beauty, thickly forested green so this is one of the beautiful affluent forest regions in the Western Ghats.

Within about an hour upside walking inside the thick jungle land we reached the bank of one of the small crystal clear stream and were able to sight the long distance view of the waterfalls from the downstream side. Cascade of waterfalls have a smaller volume of water, falls from a height of almost 500 feet.

They descend a series of 2 rock steps. Here water spills over the edge of a very wide rocky surface, this waterfall is covered by rocks on both the sides because of this it named as OnakeAbbi it mean In Kannada language as, Onake means a pounding stick which is used to pound grains in villages.

Final walk through stream between small and big rocks was impressive as we reached the immediate bottom of the falls the waterfall seems which falling from the sky height into the beautiful natural pond. The cool and pleasant atmosphere of the place gave a sweltering heat of the summer a miss. The surrounding areas were full of forests with rocks cover which leads into a deep natural reservoir.

We took bath for a long time in the pond and did lot of harmless adventure activities till the evening and had returned back home mesmerizing with the sweet and cool memories. Recent Naxalite activities have been observed in this area and were a threat for nature lovers.

Chennakeshava Temple –HULLEKERE

A small village in Arasikere Taluk has a dilapidated Channakeshava Temple. A neat structure and fine specimen of Hoysala architecture was built in 1163AD. Chennakeshava temple here stands majestically bearing testimony to the skills of architects of Hoysala era. When we reached the village the temple was closed and there was no entry to go inside the temple.

Though we enquired some villagers but to our bad luck priest and his family were away from home and they forgot to give the Temple Key to their Neighbor’s house. Already we had wasted enough time so our teammate Ashok found one small Ladder & he climbed the compound with its support and I also followed him and we climbed the compound which was 10 feet height.

Against our strong will and great enthusiasm all problems turned as ecstasy. We were able to get some great rare shots of the temple which was never taken before. We succeed to capture beautiful upper panel arts in very clear and close distance.

The height of the ladder was a problem for Rajesh Sir but he succeeded by bring another bigger ladder from the villagers with the help of our driver and finally he also joined us with great effort and it helped us to climb-down to the inside part of the temple. We pulled up the ladder and laid it on the other side of the compound wall; all descended inside the compound.

The temple was smaller in size but with full gem of arts. Some statues faces were damaged but upper part and the ceiling design was pleasing to the eye. At the main entrance there are two mammoths and a huge inscription in stone.

The Garbagriha doorway is beautiful carved. The Navaranga has eight elegantly carved niches with Dwarapalakas at the sides. All the ceilings of the temple show elegant workmanship. The ceiling panels inside the temple are a treat to watch, especially the central one. There are also fine figures of Vishnu alternating with well executed turrets and pilasters.

Even though the sculptural features on the surfaces of the outer walls are not much, there are 12 forms of Vishnu on the southern side and the 12 remaining forms on the northern side. On the west there are the sculptural works of Dharani-Varaha. Over the head of the temple there is an attractive Shikhara. In the Shikhara the special feature of Sala's brave posture is incorporated as the main symbol of the Hoysalas.

The architecture of this temple is superb in every way the fertility of the design, the thorough finish, the richness of ornamentation and the elaboration of details are unparalleled. It appears as though the hard stone had turned out to be pieces of vax in the hands of these master craftsmen.The village also has historical temples of Saptamatrikes, Iswara and Anjaneya but we missed them.

Stairway to heaven....Part-2

It was a great experience to watching beauty of nature which can’t explain by simple words. Here we can see real beauty of Shola forest & It was a unique place were never anywhere count see like this view & this type of forest. Here Suitable and extensive rainforest habitat for Lion-tailed Macaque existed in this range and that the tract probably harbored the largest contiguous population of lion tailed macaques in the Western Ghats.

Beautiful Krishnagiri Range

There is a rich avifauna collection in this forest. You can find around 195 avian species, which are rarely found outside this national park. Some of the typical birds, which finds home in Kudremukh National Park, are Malabar whistling thrush, imperial pigeon and great pied hornbill and Malabar trogon.

All so can escape it under a day and find paradise in your backyard. Even before a time when I think of the rat-race, pointed out long ago, thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity;

that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life. Yes, it all makes sense now why we live in the City, why we put up with the stress, the crowds, the never-ending hassles of urban living.

Kesava temple in Hirekadalur-Dudda

Early morning I and Ashok joined Rajesh Naik had a quick breakfast and started with Rajesh sir’s leader ship to visit ancient Keshava temple. But the journey was not so nice because of the damaged unpleasant road. Although we reached a village and enquired about the temple with one group of villagers and all the villagers saw our face with a big surprise. Because nobody had come to visit this place even the villagers didn’t bother about the ruined temple.

This was built during the time of Hoyasala King Veeranarasimha-II and it is situated in the heart of the village. The carved doorway, the turned pillars and pierced window screens used in this temple was like other Hoysala temples.

The 6 feet height Beautiful Keshava Deity has been shifted to Navaranga which had some of the rare stone carvings exhibiting the epic characters. The Mantapa with decorate shining, lathe-turned pillars which was almost in its last stage.

The sculpture within the shrine has been pointed out to be of the Hoysala style known to be unique style of Vesara architecture, where as the walls and the basements of this shrine are not much decorated but fusion of styles is associated highly architected of Hoysala craftsmanship. The outer of the sanctorum (Garbhagriha) shaped as Kadamba shikara (tower) with Kalasa (pinnacle) on top.

Local villagers also were not much interested about renovation of their village temple. Everywhere new temples are coming up but no one is interested about such a historical rare stone temples. Interestingly Archeological Department has not taken possession of this old beautiful temple. It has to take initiative steps to prevent further loss and renovate this huge temple by arduous task of destroying and eliminating the huge bushes from the Temple premises, without causing much damage to the Temple Structure.

On the way to Anugavalli Shiva temple we had seen some beautiful big lakes in gigantic size. That village is famous for KodandaRama Temple but we had decided to go to the Shiva temple. It was a union of 2 small temples which was not much attractive. But scientific inspection is needed in these areas. We could see lots of existing pieces in these surrounding areas.

Stairway to heaven....Part-1

There are not many places on the planet that deserve the saying “Stairway to heaven”. The Kudremukh ('horse-face' ) ranges are among the most beautiful and unforgettable pieces of land that I can ever seen and renowned for its Countryside land nestled in a bowl of hills & Owing to stunning dense forests the mosaic of natural grassland though the area is rich in wildlife and abundance of opportunities for Nature Lovers.

The wet climate and the tremendous water retentive capacity of the Shola grasslands and forests has led to the formation of thousands of perennial streams in the region & one of the identified hot spots for Bio-Diversity conservation in the world

We got up 1 hour before the sun and headed up into the foggy mountain. After a few minutes walk we could able to see the first rays of Sun light hitting over the top of the mountain it was amazingly beautiful and I managed to do a tiny bit of climbing to get a better view. First Glimpse of mountain in foggy morning watching from bottom was amazing to see.

We were entranced by the captivating beauty of a vast expanse of verdant meadows. With its sheer expanse of rolling meadows set against the turquoise sky and the ‘Kudremukha' summit standing guard at a far off distance, was a totally overwhelming sight.

The route from there to with the slopes colored in various shades of red and maroon, from the withering grass and shrubs. The peaks constantly reminded us of their presence through occasional glimpses when crossing initial hill ranges. A painless ascent brought us to the first meadow beyond the tree line. The place was a due reward. The sky and the landscape displayed a riot of numerous hues.

I was drawn to this spot of virginal beauty and ascended the steep grassy slopes devoid of trails. Whether sunning idly on a warm rock overlooking in idyllic views from higher up, it's a dramatic day of big weather - puffy white clouds and blue skies.

A couple of hours walk we reached the top. Had a great time on top & moved towards the range to reach another side of the summit. We moved at upper vast grasslands with reluctance to cover the next few kilometers and reached to our destiny point.

Sand Dunes Temples…Talakad

The saga of temples in Talakad is supported by the rich history of the land of the ancient dynasties of south India, the Gangas (350-1050 AD) were one of the most illustrious who ruled over a greater part of Mysore, then known by the name Gangavadi. Along with the Kadambas, the Gangas rose to power and ruled over the southern part of Karnataka. They continued to rule over Gangavadi till the close of the 10th century. When the Cholas overpowered the Gangas during the 11th century, Talakadu was renamed as Rajapura. In 1117, Vishnuvardhana, one of the greatest rulers of the Hoysala dynasty seized Talakad from the Cholas and assumed the title of Talakadugonda. In commemoration of this achievement, he built the Keerthinarayana temple at Talakad.

Today, most of the magnificent temples of this ancient town are submerged in sand. The entire stone pillars (square at the base and fitted into a wheel below the abacus) lie scattered throughout the town. Among the temples of Talakad, the Pathaleshwara, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara, Vaidyanathee-shwara and Mallikarjuna temples form the pancha lingas. In honour of these five Shiva temples, a fair is held once in 12 years called Pancha Linga Darshana. The Pancha Linga Darshana is held on a new moon day during the auspicious month of Karthika.

Keerthi-Narayana Temple (1117 A.D), Talakad

Besides the Pancha lingas, there are many other magnificent temples in Talakad. The Kapileshwara temple is one such structure that has a Navaranga with pillars, pierced stone windows and ornamented creepers with dancing figures. Another magnificent structure is the Keerthinarayana temple, which is the only temple in Talakad to have been constructed in the Hoysala style of architecture. A greater part of this temple is buried in sand. Other than the sanctum sanctorum, there is a sukanasi and a navaranga in this temple.

Inside the sanctum sanctorum stands an eight-foot-tall statue of Keerthinarayana. Recent excavations in the temple complex have brought to light remains of earlier centuries. Among the findings are an intricately carved mantapa (with carvings of Ugranarasimha) made of stone, which is about 12 foot tall. A thulasikatte, remnants of a Garuda kamba, two stone inscriptions and walls of an unknown structure were also found here.

The presence of a large mass of sand in Talakad amid lush green vegetation is something that is worth pondering. While geologists say that Talakad is filed with sand carried by the wind from the dry bed of river Cauvery, the locals still prefer to go by the age-old tale of Alamelamma and her curse.

Localite Rama Nayaka narrates the story rather dramatically. About 400 years ago, Srirangapatana is supposed to have been under the control of the mighty Vijayanagar Empire. Alamelamma was the wife of the king’s representative named Srirangaraya. Every Tuesday and Friday, Sri Ranganaya-kamma borrowed Alame-lamma’s jewels and returned it after the pooja. Meanwhile, Srirangaraya developed a tumour on his back, resembling the hood of a cobra (the disease is called Bennu Phani Roga or Raja Roga in Kannada). Srirangaraya, along with his wife, came to Talakad to worship Vaidyanatheshwara with the hope of being cured of his ailment.

Srirangaraya, however, did not survive for long, and his wife settled down in a small village called Malangi. During this period, the Wodeyars took over Srirangapatna, and started demanding the jewels. When Alamelamma could not bear it no more, she sent a nose ring to Srirangapatana and jumped into a pond in Malangi with the remaining jewels.

Before she ended her life, Alamelamma is supposed to have uttered three curses, of which one is “Talakadu Marulagi.” When translated to English, it means, “Let Talakadu be covered with sand.” The locals still believe that Alamelamma’s curse is the cause for the large mass of sand in Talakad.

Shingani Gudda

After finishing my work I directly joined Mangalore YHA team on March 19th evening and around 7 we left Mangalore & within a span of 3 hours journey reached to Shishila GopuGokule’s home stay. More guys joined our team and all had a very tasty dinner at his house. After dinner I & some of my teammates decided to sleep in the open Machan under the Full moon night (the moon will swing around Earth more closely than it has in the past 18 years, lighting up the night sky from just 356,577Km away.). It was a wonderful experience to sleep peacefully under the open sky watching the Moon stars till our eyes started to close in the chilly night.

Nice breeze blowing calmly and all was very relaxing and soothing to the mind and body I fell asleep dreaming of loveable memories in the beautiful night. After a hot bath had breakfast & took pack lunch & left that place at 7 in the morning. A few minutes’ walk we took some deviations into the forest & followed one route which passes through thick jungles with a decent uphill.

When we entered the jungle we had been swallowed by a canopy of green, our eyes snatching only an occasional glimpse of blue sky. There were many birds making mixture of hysterical sounds in the jungle which was encouraging in our journey. Eventually in the distance we heard a band of Howler monkeys.

We continued the 2 hours nice walking admiring the scenery of rain forest. It was very dense and encloses a mixture of local fruit variations. On the way along we learned about some insects and wild animals (Water dogs or Neer Nai & Mara Nai all belong to the subfamily of Lutrinae under the Mustelidae family living only in Western Ghat region in India) which are in those areas explained by Mr. Dinesh Holla. The natural flora of the surrounding is different from any other rainforest and it is beautiful in its variety.

After spending some time near water point we started to climb final destination. Crossing a few gigantic trees across the trail beneath the jungle canopy we gazed upon a carpet of dry red leaves rolling unencumbered to the horizon. Bizarrely, as we emerged onto a small clearing atop the mound, we were now above the forest canopy - standing in the sky - peering down on the largest tract of Western rain forest.

Nishane Gudda

This was the unique mountain in Charmadi range was 99% trail goes through the thick evergreen forests. We stood silently on top of the Shingani Gudda and listened to the stillness of the jungle. The only sound we heard was the heaving of our chests, the rhythmic thumping of our hearts banged in our ears. This hills surrounded by KalluPade, Nishanigudda, UdayaGiri, Amedikallu, Ettinabuja, Jenkallu & Ettinabuja on 360 degree panoramic view.

After spending enough time we left the peak & we changed our track for change. On return journey miracle I got back my mobile & Cam which I had lost on track. A long downward walk I reached the road & had bath in a river. After taking hot coffee in Gokule house we turned back to our home. It was opportunity to experience different things and a phenomenal dance of nature that transcended our imaginations after this trip.

AramaneGadde (AramaneGudda) -Part 2

Our first glimpse dissolved all our concerns, for the scenery was breathtaking! Against bright blue skies the place, perched on the steep hillside, and boasted a fabulous view of the surrounded rolling hills, forest and pampas. This place where once Mysore maharaja cultivated paddy for some time, evidence of two small check dams can be seen in the shola forests near the Aramane gadde. Apparently the raja had also planned to build a palace at this place which didn’t materialize due to some reason.

We pitched our tents in on corner of the AramaneGadde & made nice tea & put rice for night dinner Even though it was so sunny outside, the campsite was considerably cooler and water in the stream was pleasantly cold there was a beautiful stretch of grassland overlooking a valley right in front of our campsite and rest of the evening I went around investigating all surrounding ranges one by one

I was walking & I saw one huge Russell Viper in the thick grasslands just a step away, due to its characteristic body color and pattern, it was completely camouflaged and was difficult to be located in the grass luckily I saw before I could step on it but was unable to take any photos.

After 15 minutes walk I reached Western side of the hill top. I locate Mugilagiri peak from that place & had a great full glimpse of AramaneGadde, really it was a Paradise for nature’s lover. We spent some time on top & started to hike main spot AramaneGudda peak. This time I walked with extra care & after a long walk we reached AramaneGudda peak 1270m of elevation..

From top I could locate Kadumane Estate, MuruGudda, MurkalGudda, OmbattuGudda & JenkalluGuda. Rest of my teammates also joined me we had solo photo sessions had nice valley view spent till Sunset later we started to descend down. Night after a campfire we all had a good sleep.

Morning we decided to go through new track but we were disappointed because of our guides they did not agree to come with us because of risk & fear factors. A hard thwarted mood we stepped back. Initial our return journey was quite comfortable after 1 hour walk once again by our guide only changed his mood discuss with us about his new plan.

He told he knew the direction & will bring us the way through some inside route. Certainly, going downhill was in my mind a more attractive option than continuing to climb same route and I persuaded to choose that lower trail. What a fortuitous decision that would be, for it led to the big trouble.

The descent was steep on a sandy terrain it was very hot and we were dehydrated. We were afraid to drink water; because we wanted to preserve as much as possible. We could hardly see any trees in the vicinity to take rest. If we sat to take rest; this scorching Sun was de-hydrating us even more. Continuous climbing down was more frantic & in our journey some places were deadly edge of the Valley side walk

Finally with lot of frustration we climbed down and reached the Highway road at late mid-noon. Had bath at Kempuhole & caught a return bus home and had quite good sleep in the bus with fantastic reminiscences......
